Giant bulk carrier runs aground near Great Lakes
MV Paul R Tregurtha, the largest ship operating on the Great Lakes (North America) ran aground on the St Marys River between Neebish Island and the mainland on Wednesday. The incident has triggered a traffic blockade in the area.
The bulk carrier measures 1013ft and 6 inches and holds several records in cargo loads. The US Coast Guard officials have already reached the spot and are trying to bring the vessel to a nearby dock.
The Great Lakes-based bulk carrier, which is the current ‘Queen of Lakes’, is the largest vessel operating on the Great Lakes area. Launched as the ‘William J De Lancey’, the vessel was the last of the 13 “thousand footers” to run on the Great Lakes.
